WHERE CAN I GET A FLIGHT TO EAST CRETE?

Sitia’s airport (tel: +30 28430 24424/22671) is due to accept international flights from 2010 (watch East Crete Blog for further details).
Olympic Airlines (www.olympicairlines.com ) operates direct flights from Athens to Sitia, flight time takes 65 minutes.

Crete currently has two other airports:

Chania’s Ioannis Daskalogiannis airport (tel: +30 28210 63245/83800) is about 9kms from the city centre.
Heraklion’s Nikos Kazantzakis airport (tel: +30 +30 28103 97800) 5kms east of the city , is127 kms from Sitia and 70 kms from Aghios Nikolaos. A regular bus service operates from Heraklion to Agios Nikolaos and Sitia

HOW DO I GET TO AND FROM THE AIRPORT?

HERAKLION

From Heraklion airport by car: the airport has long and short-term parking. Take the main road west to reach Heraklion and east, for the main road which connects with Crete’s north coast.
From Heraklion airport rent a car: Avis, Autohellas, Hertz, Eurodollar and other main car rental companies are present in the Arrivals hall.
From Heraklion airport by bus: take the 78 bus which takes 20 minutes to take you to the city centre and stops off at the Archaeological Museum.
From Heraklion airport by taxi: taxis park in front of the Arrivals hall. Transport to city centre should cost €12 to €15 (2009). Check the list outside the taxi rank that shows prices for main destinations.
Banking, communications and facilities: there is one bank in the airport where you can change money. There are several card telephones. Disabled facilities are limited within the airport . There is one toilet for the disabled near the baggage handling counter.

CHANIA

From Chania airport by car: airport has long and short-term parking parking. Park for free on the approach road to the airport, use the more expensive central car park, or leave your car in the much cheaper carpark 100 meters from the airport and use the airport’s minibus shuttle.

From Chania airport rent a car: Avis, Autohellas, Hertz, Eurodollar and other main car rental companies are present in the Arrivals hall.
From Chania airport by bus: fares are cheap, but buses only run into town two or three times a day.
From Chania airport by taxi: taxis park in front of the airport. Transport to city centre should cost €18-€20 (2009) Check the list outside the taxi rank that shows prices for main destinations.
Banking, communications and facilities: there is one bank in the airport where you can change money, several card phones and gift shops.

WHAT ABOUT FERRIES?

Ferries travel from Athens (Piireas) to Sitia, Agios Nikolaos and Heraklion. There is also a ferry from Agios Nikolaos, which stops at Sitia on its way to Rhodes via Karpathos and Kassos.
